Lassi with Lavina Guide to Upcoming Events –

IAAC’s Seductive Summer of Dance

Ever wondered what makes New York City so special? It’s the unmatched opportunity to see the best of all cultures in the most unexpected places. The Indo-American Arts Council once again brings the joy of Indian dance to a populace which is otherwise engaged in rushing to catch the subway, rushing to chores, rushing to work. Yes, it’s time for the Tenth Annual Erasing Borders Festival of Indian Dance.

For a few glorious hours everything stops – and the magic of Indian dance and music takes over.

The annual tradition of scores of ghungroos chiming downtown is coming, so get yourself to Battery Park for the fantastic outdoor concert on August 15. This free concert falls on the 70th anniversary of India’s independence and showcases all the wonderful dance forms from different parts of India – Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kathakali, and Kucipudi as well as the lesser known Sattriya Nritya of Assam and the Kalbelia snake charmers from Rajasthan. All the magic happens at Robert Wagner Jr Park, Battery Park City, and is hosted by The Battery Dance Festival.

Bharatanatyam duo: Viraja Mandhre and Shyamjith Kiran

While this free concert is the free-for-all grand finale, the action actually starts on August 13, with indepth dance workshops. So if you’re curious about some of the more unusual dance forms like Kalbelia and Sattriya, join the dance workshops at the Pace University studios on Williams Street.  WORKSHOPS

Want more dance? Attend the hugely satisfying indoor concert on August 14 from 7-9 pm at the Schimmel Center, Pace University on Spruce Street. This year’s program highlights the many ways in which Indian dancers ‘play’ with tradition by adapting their music and costumes to produce works that express a 21st century aesthetic which is yet embedded in tradition. It promises to be a fascinating experience.  INDOOR concert

Parul Shah – contemporary Kathak

The evening is a virtual feast from the  choreography of the Bharatanatyam duo, Viraja Mandhre and Shyamjith Kiran to Parul Shah’s contemporary Kathak accompanied by live music. There is also  Bharatanatyam dancer Ashwini Ramaswamy in a solo excerpt from her evolving new work, Nocturne, and members of Kalanidhi Dance in a group dance from the opera Lalla Roukh (by Félicien David) choreographed for Opera Lafayette by Anuradha Nehru.

Three days of  Indian dance and music, so mark your calendars and get into the groove!
