Synopsis:

While examining aesthetics in the context of globalization, this documentary explores the life and work of painter Natvar Bhavsar, a pioneer who paved the way for subsequent generations of artists. The central theme of the film is the multicultural nature of his work and how that has influenced the trajectory of his career from his upbringing in India to his move to New York City, the nerve center of culture and the arts. In time, Bhavsar was interacting closely with such artistic luminaries as Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, and Clyfford Still. The first of its kind, this film is not only a history of one artistís life, but also a celebration of the Asian diasporic community and its contribution to American contemporary art.

Director Sundaram Tagore:

Sundaram Tagore is a New York-≠-based art historian and gallerist. He was the first gallerist to focus exclusively on globalization, assembling a roster of artists from around the world. A descendant of the influential Indian poet and Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore, he promotes East-≠-West dialogues through his contributions to numerous exhibitions as well as his eponymous galleries with their multicultural and multidisciplinary events. He was nominated by Avenue magazine in 1999 as one of the 100 Most Influential Asian Americans in the United States and was recently the subject of a 30-≠-minute interview on CNNís Talk Asia. Natvar Bhavsar: The Poetics of Color is his first documentary film.
