Saeed Akhtar Mirza, 1989, India; 111m
This ground-breaking naturalistic portrayal of a working-class family traces the pressures of being Muslim in contemporary Bombay. Set amidst the Hindutva mobilization of the 1980’s and the consequent explosive communal conflicts, Mirza’s hard-hitting New Wave film suggests the possibilities of transcending a rough environment through education and work. But there’s also the sense of individual choice as an illusion versus the relentless forces pushing the Muslim community into subterranean forms of existence.
