KATHMANDU: With branding as the emerging corporate buzz word and companies investing major resources to create brands that are winners, ‘The Himalayan Times Perspectives Brand Summit’ to be held on July 26-27, provides an opportunity to learn the secrets of winning brands from the best in the industry who have been there and done it.

An opportunity of a lifetime awaits those who want to learn how to create a winning brand from Kaushik Roy who has spent over three decades in the sphere of media and communication. He started his career with Hindustan Thompson Associates (JWT), Kolkata, in the Creative Department and later moved on to Account Management. Kaushik has held the positions of General Manager - South, Clarion Advertising (now Bates); Executive Director and Chief Creative Officer - Mudra Communications; Head - Corporate Brand Strategy, South Asia, Philips.

In 2003, Kaushik left Mudra, a Reliance group Company to join Reliance Infocomm as Head - Branding and Marketing Communication and was responsible for the launch of Reliance Mobile, which became the biggest operator within a short span of 18 months.

He is currently President - Brand Strategy and Marketing Communication, and Advisor to Chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd.

Kaushik has been responsible for some of India’s most successful and effective campaigns, such as ‘We also make steel’ for Tata Steel; ‘World in your Pocket’ for Max Touch (now Vodafone); ‘Let’s make things better’ - Star Products Campaign for Philips and ‘Karlo duniya mutthi mein’ for Reliance Mobile.

Recently in 2008, he was responsible for the branding, marketing and team formation of the Reliance Mumbai Indians team for the first season of the Indian Premier League.

He currently looks after the marketing and branding for the Reliance 4G project as the sponsor from Chairman’s office.

Kaushik has held many important industry positions such as the President of the Advertising Club Bombay, President of the International Advertising Association - India Chapter, Member Executive Committee - Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI), Member Steering Committee - Ad Asia 2003 - Jaipur, a Founder Member of the ‘Subhas Ghosal Foundation’, and the ‘Bimal Roy Memorial Committee’.

His hobbies include photography, painting, music and writing. After several group shows, in 2006 Kaushik had a successful art exhibition.

The same year he completed his first feature film ‘Apna Asmaan’, as writer and director.

The film had its theatrical release in September 2007 and received a lot of critical acclaim and bagged the prestigious German Star - the Best Feature Film Award at the Stuttgart Film Festival 2007.

The film has also been screened at the Indo American Arts Council Film Festival - New York, the San Luis Film Festival - Argentina, and at the Closing Gala of the Reelworld Film Festival - Toronto.

Kaushik is married to Nina and has two sons, Rajeev and Roshan. For Kaushik branding is everything. “My first exposure to brands was through the Roy Rogers comic books, where horses and cows were branded for easy recognition. Not much has changed except everything is getting branded - including human beings and recognition has reached a different level of art and science....,” he says. He looks forward to sharing insights and experiences that could help you make your brand a winner.
