Anurag Kashyap’s tale of corruption and systemic violence will open the New York Indian Film Festival on May 5.

Aparna Sen’s adaptation of Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay’s multi-generational story Goynar Baksho will close the festival on May 10. Geethu Mohandas’ quest film Liar’s Dice is the centerpiece screening.

Kashyap returns to the 14th festival after previously screening Gangs Of Wasseypur in 2012 and will take place in an on-stage conversation after the screening. Ugly premiered in Cannes 2013.

"We are thrilled to be opening this year's New York Indian Film Festival with Anurag Kashyap new film Ugly," said festival director Aseem Chhabra.

"Anurag has been in the forefront of India's growing indie film movement, always pushing the boundaries and inspiring the new generation of filmmakers. Personally I am a big fan of his films."

The full line-up of screenings and events will be announced on April 8.
