“Erasing Borders: Exhibition of Contemporary Indian Art of the Diaspora” at Aicon Gallery
August 17, 2011

The Aicon Gallery in Manhattan is currently hosting “Erasing Borders: Exhibition of Contemporary Indian Art of the Diaspora”, on view until 3 September. The event features the works of artists of Indian origin living in the US.

The exhibition highlights works of art by the Indian community to underline their important presence in America, especially in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Various media feature, including photography, painting, sculpture and film.

The artists on display include renowned artist Natvar Bhavsar, but also up-coming artists such as Sara Suleman, 27-year-old artist from Pakistan. Her oeuvre is composed of films based on the principle of transition and motion. One of the featured films, entitled Converge (2010), was inspired by the trip she made to Karachi, where she discovered many birds.

25-year-old Sonia Chaudhary is also a young artist who worked on the conflict between the Muslim world and America’s Christian community. Her works combine the two cultures without favouring one or the other, but simply illustrate their relationship.
