The Indo-American Arts Council presents its Annual Indoors Erasing Borders Festival of Indian Dance September 5th - 6th, 2014

The Indo-American Arts Council brings Erasing Borders Festival of Indian Dance Indoors showcasing interpretative full length dances that focus on traditional tales and modern narratives. These performances act as a cultural commentary on the changing relations between India and America, showing howrich myth and immigrant reality is translated into a globalized context through dance.
On September 5th the dancers and their choreographers work as critical thinkers who conceptualize their pieces to resonate with a modern audience, covering themes relevant to today's mainstream audience. Emily McLoughlin and Leah Raphael Curtis of Delhi Dance Theater will perform a full length piece, choreographed by them, called “Not Your Mothers”, a series of duets that deal with the theme of changing roles of women in India. British Asian dancer Subash Viman Gorania also works with the concept of identity. He embraces the plurality of identity by exploring the question of the ‘other’ while constructing a sense of self through his evocative piece ‘Morphed.’
The dances also tap on the existing literature of myths and legends with the possibility ofexploring modern themes. Mesma Belsare’s The Vermin’s Will is inspired by Saiva Siddhantha’s philosophy and Carl Jung’s study. It chronicles the journey of an undefined being as he takes different forms of life and is liberated from his memories as he identifies with different aspects of his liberator, Sivan. With ‘Aravan- The Desolate’ Dr. Mithul Gupta and Shambhik Ghose bring on stage a familiar episode from Mahabharata where Aravan is convinced to sacrifice himself for the Pandavas. The festival also has Meena Murugesan collaborating with Shyamala Moorthy to create a piece called “We used to see this” about the history and development of Bharatnatyam while questioning constructs like space and the relationship between the audience and the performers.The festival brings a different perspective to well-known myths and recent debates by addressing them through a medium seldom used for this- movement. http://www.iaac.us/IAAC_dance_fest2014/Schedule-Performances-Indoors.htm

The Indo-American Arts Council brings Erasing Borders Festival of Indian dance that translates traditional and contemporary Indian dance into New York’s vibrant landscape annually. The festival showcases different dance forms- classical and experimental, showcasing a melange of tradition with the modern.
Now in its 7th year, this exciting festival continues to promote Indian dance, produced and performed in India and abroad. These internationally recognized dancers are an eclectic mix, having previously approached dance from both performance and academic standpoints. They have successfully established themselves as pioneers of modern dance and preservers of traditional forms.
This year’s line-up is exceptionally talented. It includes celebrated Kathak dancer, choreographer and researcher Sanjukta Sinha, who has trained under the legendary Kumudini Lakhia. Prabal Gupta, a versatile Kathakali performer and research scholar who specializes in Keezhupadam and performs both Purusha Vesham and Stree Vesham, is also a part of the festival. One of our solo artists, Dr. Yamini Saripalli is an internationally acclaimed Kuchipudi performer who has also studied Karnatic classical music. She is known for propagating interest in this ancient dance form through her performances and teaching. Srishti Dances of India, headed by Sreyashi Dey, is a dance company that performs collaborative Odissi pieces.
The festival is free and will be held outdoors, in New York City’s Robert F. Wagner Park on August 20th 2014 from 6 to 8pm.
This event is sponsored by Iman cosmetics, a skincare and cosmetics brand founded by model/entrepreneur Iman, to address the issue of lack of products for skin tones for women of colour representing various races, cultures and ethnicities.
