Festival Of Indian Dance at Schimmel Center

Kalanidhi Dance from Washington, DC will be dancing at the Schimmel Center and Wagner Park. Photo Credit: Louis Forget. Below: Viraja Mandhre and Shyamjith Kiran also perform at both venues.

A performance of Indian dance in all its beautiful nuances. Stories are woven into dances, narrating myths and legends of India into vements and gestures, using genres of classical, folk and modern dance.

The mission of the Erasing Borders: Festival of Indian Dance is to present Indian dance through its multiplicity of forms and expressions. The festival features artists from India and the South Asian Diaspora. Presentations range from traditional classical repertoire to contemporary, modern and post-modern works that are inspired by India or an Indian dance vocabulary.

When: Monday, Aug. 14, 7 pm

Where: Schimmel Center at Pace University, 3 Spruce St.

Tickets: $30. Click here.

A free outdoor performance will take place on Tuesday, August 15, 7-9 pm at Wagner Park, Battery Park City, hosted by The Battery Dance Festival.

There will be a range of dance forms from around India. From the south: Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kathakali and Kuchipudi; the east: the Sattriya Nritya of Assam; and from central India: Rajasthani
folk dances including that of the famous tribe of Kalbelia snake charmers. Works range from traditional invocations to deities – even the revered serpent – to one in which a group of younger dancers expresses ‘Why they Dance’.
