Not all of Indian cinema is associated with Bollywood. And the Indo-American Arts Council's 11th annual New York Indian Film Festival, going on from May 4 to 8, is the place to get a real feel for the independent and social aspects of Indian film in New York. It may not be all singing and dancing, but there will definitely be some at the festival's red carpet events and after parties.

"NYIFF energizes New York City's diversity by presenting amazing independent and diaspora films from the Indian subcontinent while keeping a close watch on Bollywood's foray into alternate cinema," said Indo-American Arts Council Executive Director Aroon Shivdasani. Among the films screening at the festival are Do Dooni Chaar, Iti Mrinalini, and Noukadubi. Special guests Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, and Habib Faisal will all be attending the red carpet premiere. Directors Aparna Sen and Rituparno Ghosh will be attending the festival as well.

The 10th annual NYIFF was hosted in many venues, including the School of Visual Arts theater.

Habib Faisal's Do Dooni Chaar is about a middle-class schoolteacher and his family's hopes of owning a car during hardships. The Walt Disney India-produced film will open the film festival on Wednesday, May 4, at the Paris Theater.

Sen's Iti Mrinalini will premiere as the centerpiece selection. The Bengali film features Sen and her daughter, award-winning actress Konkona Sen Sharma, who both play the title role but at different ages.

The May 8 closing night selection is the late Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore's acclaimed novel Noukadubi adapted by Ghosh. In addition, the NYIFF will pay a special tribute to the 150th birthday anniversary of Tagore.

The IAAC's film festival was created in the wake of the September 11 attacks to create a better understanding of the Indian culture by bringing the most acclaimed feature films, shorts and documentaries to America.
