Bio

Swati Khurana's work mines personal narratives with a focus on gender, popular culture, and the seductive promises made by rituals. She received her B.A. from Columbia University, her M.A. from New York University with an intensive studio program at Instituto Universario Di Architettura in Venice, Italy. Her current projects include: solo exhibitions in Miami (Diaspora Vibe Gallery) and Fajara, Gambia (Safari Gardens); Travel Study & Travel Grant from the Jerome Foundation; a Multimedia Residency at BCAT/Rotunda; the Emerge Program at Aljira; Artist-in-Residency at the Kartong Village Development Committee (Gambia,) and "Sandarbh U.S." International Artist Residency Program at Moultrie, Georgia; group exhibitions at Jersey City Museum ('The Feminine Mystique'), RushArts ('NeoNeoDada' and 'Red Carpet Video show' for ArtBasel), Exit Art ('Sultana's Dream'), Rutgers University ('Passage to Jersey'), University of Miami Gallery ('Interstice'), Art and Culture Center of Hollywood ('Exploding the Lotus'); and screenings at the NYSouthAsianArabAmerican Film Festival, Women's International Video Festival (Tuscon, AZ), Contemporary Modern Art Projects (Sylmar, CA). Her artwork can be viewed at www.swatikhurana.com

Artist Statement

Love in the Time of Silsila

As a child, I learned everything I ever needed to know about love from Bollywood cinema - modesty, choreography and the virtuosity in crossing time, space and costume continuums. The 1981 film Hindi 'Silsila with megastars embodying that which is slick (Amitabh Bachchan with that which sizzles sex appeal (Rekha , coinciding with the popularization of the VCR, imprinted certain scenes in my mind. By manipulating film stills, I revisited a particular song that takes the duo to a tulip field in Holland where they sing, dance and gaze love and placed them in similar dream-like landscapes amplified by glittery, fragile and illusory chandeliers.
