Artist Bio/Statement

Nandini Chirimar grew up in Jaipur, India and came to the USA in 1987 for further studies. She did a BFA in Drawing and Painting from Cornell University, a summer residency at the Skowhegan School of Art, and an MFA in Painting from the Maryland Institute. Additionally, she studied viscosity printing from master printmaker Arun Bose, and spent four years in Japan learning woodblock printing from Taika Kinoshita, exhibiting her work and teaching art. She currently lives in New York City with her husband and two daughters.

Nandini has worked with many media, including drawing, painting, gold leaf, papermaking, printmaking, and photography. In her current work she uses the above media with household and other objects to create mixed media and sculptural work.

Nandini's work is a visual 'journal' of her life, drawn from her practical, emotional and visual experiences.

She is interested in things of daily use, the spaces we live in, her Indian culture and her different roles as an Indian woman/mother living in America.

Currently, Nandini is working on a series titled "Objects of Worship". In this series she explores objects used in Indian worship traditions. The foundation of this work is meticulously detailed drawings on Japanese Kozo paper, from which stem mixed media and relief pieces. She is also doing some collaborative work with poet Purvi Shah, where they explore the social and cultural context of these objects through a combination of poetry and visual art. The initial body of work from this series was shown in Nadini's solo exhibit at Allen Gallery Chelsea, New York in November 2008.
