Violence against women is a serious social problem in India and much of the world. It takes many forms from feticide and dowry deaths to rape. “Despair and Hope” is the artists expression of the deep anguish and outrage that these barbaric acts continue to take place. The artist uses symbols of the feminine like torn sarees and ornaments like broken bangles to create expressive abstract bird like shapes that suggest hope.
