Synopsis: For fans of the South Indian actor Rajnikanth, the line between cinema and reality is as blurred as the distinction between star and God. For the Love of a Man explores how fandom expressed through enormous posters, elaborate public rituals, and the frenzied atmosphere inside theatres has deep social, political, and devotional foundations in South India. For the fans, largely men – but ranging in age from teenagers to grandfathers, fandom is about more than cinema – it is about brotherhood, identity, or even social aspiration. The film follows various stories – performers seeking a shot at fame by mimicking the star, families managing the consequences of the fans’ spending on movies, theatre owners worrying about fans running wild, or fans professing changing entire life directions based on the star’s dialogues in films. more>>

Even though their time together as kids was brief, what they shared with each other turned into a beautiful memory that he would often revisit. It has been fifteen years and the intimate innocence they shared seems to be now replaced with a matured distance. He picks her up from work and drops her home in the nights that follow. He tries to get close to her hoping to find the same little girl he fell in love with. Instead, he finds her wrapped in darkness and is now caught in a web of conflicted emotions. What ensues is a passionate tale of love, loss and acceptance.

About the Director:
Selvamani Selvaraj Growing up in India films have a strong effect on you. I remember as a kid craving for that feeling of being blissfully lost in the magic of cinema. The people on screen who were strangers till a point became the ones who mattered the most. Their struggles and victories became mine. This effect influenced the way I looked at life and situations. I felt the need to share what I felt through them. Even before I realized I started making films. more>>

Eager not to be confined to family entertainers, Manikandan’s second feature, Kutrame Thandanai, is starkly different in tone and artistic treatment to his colourful debut, but just as technicallyadvanced and narratively gripping - containing his signature form of subtle social commentary as it relates to modern day Tamil culture. more>>
