March 2013: The Indo American Arts Council (IAAC) is proud to present the tenth annual IAAC Erasing Borders 2013: Exhibition of Contemporary Art of the Diaspora curated by Vijay Kumar. This group exhibition explores and draws from the experiences of artists whose origins can be traced to the Indian subcontinent. Cultural dislocation often produces unexpected and profound results; memory collides with exile, culture engages with adaptation to understand the powerful and often disturbing concepts of change and assimilation. The artists confront issues of sexuality, terror, disease and multiple identities to weave together existence in a globalized context while subject matter is often drawn from the country of origin, many of the aesthetic values and political concerns come from the artists' newfound situations. The result deserves a new "ism", a new journey to an old destination.
In the past the exhibition has been successfully exhibited at Aicon Gallery, NY, Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts and Queen’s Museum of Art in New York, NY. Leveraging the momentum for Indian art, this year’s exhibition is slated to travel all across New York starting at the prestigious Flushing Town Hall in April with an opening reception on 4th April, 2013 from 4:30pm- 6:30 pm, then moving to The Hammond Museum in June. The show will then end at MIT where it will be displayed from mid September to mid October 2013.
The 28 participating contemporary artists interpret diverse subject matter-figurative, abstract and conceptual-in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, prints, photographs, etchings, sculpture and installation.
The exhibition features works by 28 talented South Asian contemporary artists including:
Aaliyah Gupta, Anjali Deshmukh, Anujan Ezhikode, Avani Patel, Bivas Chaudhuri, Dhanashree Gadiyar, Ela Shah, Tara Sabharwal, Firoz Mahmud, George Oommen, MD Tokon, Mansoora Hassan, Mumtaz Hussain, Mustafa Faruki, Niamul bari, Nirmal Raja, Parul Mehra, Pritika Chowdhry, Reet Das, Ruee Gawarikar,Sangeeta Reddy, Veru Narula, Alkananda Mukerji, Antonio Puri, Claudia Dias,Reeta Gidwani Kamarkar and Kulvinder Kaur Dhew.
