| Indo American Arts Council Exhibition of the Contemporary Indian Art of the Diaspora 2014 | |

July 2014: The Indo American Arts Council (IAAC) is proud to present the tenth annual IAAC Erasing Borders 2014: Exhibition of Contemporary Art of the Diaspora curated by Vijay Kumar. This group exhibition explores and draws from the experiences of artists whose origins can be traced to the Indian subcontinent. Cultural dislocation often produces unexpected and profound results; memory collides with exile, culture engages with adaptation to understand the powerful and often disturbing concepts of change and assimilation. The artists confront issues of sexuality, terror, disease and multiple identities to weave together existence in a globalized context while subject matter is often drawn from the country of origin, many of the aesthetic values and political concerns come from the artists' newfound situations. The result deserves a new "ism", a new journey to an old destination. In the past the exhibition has been successfully exhibited at Aicon Gallery, NY, Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, The Hammond Museum, The Charles Wang Center, The Queen’s Museum of Art in New York and myriad other museums and galleries. Leveraging the momentum for Indian art, this year’s group exhibition is slated to travel all across the greater New York area, starting at the fabulous new Queens Museum, moving to Crossing Art Gallery, the National Arts Club, Arthur M. Berger Art Gallery, Williamsburg Art & Historical Center among other venues to be confirmed within the next month. The 29 participating contemporary artists interpret diverse subject matter-figurative, abstract and conceptual-in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, prints, photographs, etchings, sculpture and installation. The exhibition features works by 29 talented South Asian contemporary artists including: Niamul Bari, Shanthi Chandrasekar, Bivas Chaudhuri, Bushra Chaudry, Nandini Chirimar, Tarik Currimbhoy, Reet Das, Delna Dastur,Anujan Ezhikode, Mustafa Faruki, Sunil Garg, Reeta Gidwani Karmakar, Mansoora Hassan, Mumtaz Hussain, Smrita Jain, Renuka Khanna, Chandrika Marla, Parul Mehra, Rahul Mehra, Alka Mukerji, Nipun Manda, Avani Patel, Arun Prem, Antonio Puri, Sangeeta Reddy, Amin Rehman, Pinku Roy, Tara Sabharwal, Md Tokon Opening Reception at Crossing Art on July 19th from 4-6 pm: Dates: July 19th – August 16th.
